Marble is a natural stone, that comes in a variety of finishes/colours. It originates as limestone and through intense heat and pressure in its environment it transforms into marble. This process often results in other minerals being incorporated into the stone as well, which is often what gives the slabs their unique beauty and appeal. These typically appear as a swirl through the slab unlike the speckled or flecked nature of granite.
Marble is much softer than granite, and suited to lower traffic areas. It will be more susceptible to heat damage and chipping than its harder counterparts. Regardless, marble is still an extremely popular option for counter tops. While it is ‘soft’ for a stone, it will still be much more durable than other common choices such as laminate or wooden worktops.
